Abstract Awards Highlights - 11 October 2010
Healthcare experts from the Middle East region convened at the Rheumatology Exhibition and Congress to form a judging panel for the “Abbott Best Abstract Award”. Sponsored by Abbott Laboratories, the Award recognises excellence in cutting edge research on rheumatic disease in the region. With an estimated 20 per cent of the UAE population suffering from some sort of rheumatic disease in their life time, future advancement of medical knowledge in this field is crucial and recognition by their peers will validate all the hard work that goes into medical research and patient care.
Out of the 30 abstracts submitted for the Award, first prize was awarded to Dr Ferhana Najam from Tawam Hospital, Al Ain, for her abstract presentation on “Benefit and risk profile of Anti-TNF Therapy in patients with Immune Mediated Inflammatory Disease.” Dr Mustafa Ahmed from The City Hospital, Dubai, was runner up. Dr Ahmed’s presentation discussed “Lupus Nephritis presenting with more severe inflammation and poorer response to therapy in patients from Dubai”. The Awards were presented by Dr Waleed Al Shehhi, Chairperson, Emirates Society of Rheumatology (ESR).
IIR Middle East, the producers of Arab Health, worked with a panel of judges made up of international and regional experts including Dr Mohammed Hammoudeh, consultant rheumatologist at Hamed Medical Corporation and president of the Rheumatology Society Qatar, Prof. Rohini Handa, senior consultant rheumatologist at Apollo Indraprastha Hospitals in India and president of the Indian Rheumatology Association, Dr Ayman Mofti, director of Al Biraa Arthritis Clinic in Dubai, and Dr Imad Uthman, professor of clinical medicine and head of the rheumatology division at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. The winner was announced during a presentation ceremony on Day 2 of the ESR Rheumatology Conference, which will continue on 12 of October, 2010, as part of the 3rd Annual Rheumatology Exhibition and Congress held at Al Murooj Rotana Hotel, Dubai.
“The Award is recognition of work done by the team behind the research and will encourage future research which ultimately will be reflected in improvement of patient care,” says Dr Hammoudeh, member of the judging panel for the Best Abstract Award. “Our criteria for the Award will particularly depend on knowledge contribution where the abstract builds and expands on previous literature or theories in rheumatology. The winning material was up-to-date, relevant, clearly presented and innovative, leading to future advancement in our medical knowledge.”
